About
About CH Marine Yachts
Located between the North and South forks on the East End of Long Island, Shelter Island has a rich background of seafaring tradition. Close proximity to the Hampton’s provides easy access for visitors to order and build a new vessel or admire the creation of the world’s finest yachts. Coecles Harbor Marine has been honored to handcraft and create some of the finest yachts for over 30 years.
In 2000, we expanded our facilities and opened a new boat building shop down the street from the boatyard, and it is here where each new Shelter Island yacht takes shape. We are fortunate to have a staff of highly-skilled carpenters, mechanics, electricians, painters and fiberglass specialists in our shop; our common goal here is to build the best.
Our Philosophy
For over 30 years, CH Marine has been dedicated to building some of the most unique and admired boats in the Northeast. Our meticulous attention to detail is what guides us through the building process, thus resulting in boats that are of unparalleled quality and beauty.
Perhaps our extreme determination for perfecting our craft helps explain why the majority of boats we have built are still in the hands of their original owners.
Our Materials
Each hull is built to last using vinylester resin and gelcoat, KEVLAR® fiberglass cloth vacuum bagged with a Corecell foam core. The hardware, system components and machinery we use have all been selected for quality and longevity. If it costs a little more, than so be it; we do not compromise.
Only the finest teak is used when building a Shelter Island yacht, each piece being selected for grain and color. They are painstakingly hand crafted into the beautiful pieces of brightwork found on every boat we build. For example, the windshield on a Runabout is truly a work of art, a fine piece of furniture that’s built tough enough to withstand the chance encounter with a cresting, crashing wave. The exterior teak is finished with a traditional tung oil varnish, applied one coat at a time and hand rubbed between coats for a finish that must be seen to be appreciated. The process doesn’t end until our varnisher is satisfied that the grain is filled to perfection (usually requiring upwards of 12 coats). It’s no wonder that these Downeast style boats turn heads in every port.
It's All In The Details
Our Craftsmen
"It's in the details," a phrase that you will hear time and again about CH Marine's reputation for building distinctive yachts. From the mirror finish hand-polished custom made type 316 stainless steel chocks or unique folding cockpit steps, it takes a trained eye to spot the hundreds of small details that our craftsman build into each boat. CH Marine craftsmen and women take immense pride in every classic boat that is built.
It's not uncommon to see a few watery eyes when a new boat leaves the shop; such is the dedicated nature of our artisans. Because we build each boat on a semi-custom basis, new owners are welcome to stop by during the building process. Many of the unique features found on our boats were born from the requirements of experienced yachtsman.
Our Boatbuilding Workshop
CH Marine and adjoining Coecles Harbor Marina & Boatyard are situated on the east side of Shelter Island at the head of Coecles Harbor. In addition to building great boats, we care for and maintain some of the areas finest yachts, whether they are built with traditional wooden construction or more modern materials.
Our new shop adjoining the boatyard allows us to work in an up to date controlled environment utilizing the most modern equipment and processes. It is here that each Shelter Island yacht is painstakingly hand crafted and assembled. We welcome new projects and have handled the construction of custom yachts up to 57 feet in length.
